It’s been a turbulent few weeks for PlayStation users. Sony recently revealed that physical game production across its ecosystem will cease in 2028, the same year the PS6 could arrive, while quietly announcing the impending closure of the PS3 and PS Vita storefronts. The community is furious, and a quick glance at PlayStation’s social media channels makes that abundantly clear. For weeks, players have been pushing back and attempting to pressure Sony into reversing its decisions, a campaign that appears unlikely to change anything. And now, to make matters worse, the PSN has suffered another major worldwide outage. Here’s what we know.
The PSN is currently down on PS5 and PS4
Here we go again. The PSN is once more experiencing serious difficulties, with several of its services currently unavailable. Since approximately 1 PM CEST on July 24th, users around the world have been reporting widespread issues across PSN, particularly on PS5. While some players are still able to access certain features, many others are locked out entirely, online gaming, game downloads, trophy lists, friends lists, the PS App, and crucially, purchased games are all inaccessible for a significant portion of users. Sony’s official PlayStation Network status page continues to show a normal status, suggesting the company has yet to formally acknowledge the problem.
On Downdetector, however, the picture tells a very different story, reports have been surging since around 12:40 PM CEST, with the spike showing no signs of plateauing. Given the volume of complaints, Sony should be forced to respond relatively quickly. The timing couldn’t be worse for the Japanese company, which will find it increasingly difficult to convince skeptical players to embrace an all-digital future when the PSN and its services are this unreliable, and actively preventing people from accessing games they have paid for.
Problems have been piling up for the service. Just last month, Sony was forced to temporarily remove the recently played games feature after it became flooded with hentai titles, shovelware, and various other errors. For now, there’s nothing to do but wait for an official statement.
