The PS5 is getting an update that adds a feature that should have been there from day one

With the PS6 beginning to loom on the horizon, Sony isn’t done refining its current console just yet. A new PS5 update is currently being tested in beta, and it promises to bring a long-overdue quality-of-life improvement to the interface that players have been asking for since launch.

An update that PS5 players are going to appreciate

PS5 updates sometimes surface ahead of any official announcement, either through PlayStation itself or through eagle-eyed beta testers. That’s exactly what’s happened here, a photo shared on Reddit by a player participating in the beta program has given us an early look at what’s coming next for the console’s software. What it reveals is a navigation change that should make a meaningful difference to the daily experience of using a PS5.

The leak, posted by Reddit user FSTGang, shows a new navigation bar running along the top of the home screen, and crucially, the ability to move between menus simply by pressing L1 and R1 on the DualSense controller. No more awkward back-and-forth scrolling across the interface. Just clean, intuitive navigation at the tap of a shoulder button.

This sits within PlayStation’s broader ongoing effort to polish the PS5 experience. Recent updates have focused on home screen customization, but this one goes a step further, addressing the fundamental feel of navigating the console day to day. It’s a welcome move, even if it has taken until the tail end of the console’s lifecycle to arrive.
