2026 is shaping up to be the year PlayStation draws a definitive line under the PS4 era. Sony will continue to provide the bare minimum in terms of technical upkeep, primarily to patch security vulnerabilities and keep older hardware safe, but its creative and commercial energy is now overwhelmingly focused on PS5. First-party releases are exclusively PS5 at this point, and live service titles are steadily walking away from a console that once served as home to some of the generation’s most celebrated games like God of War, Ghost of Tsushima or the Horizon Zero Dawn saga. PS Plus is following the same trajectory, with the service increasingly built around PlayStation 5.
None of that, however, has changed Sony’s remarkably consistent communication habits. Outside of the occasional State of Play shake-up, the publisher runs like clockwork, around ten new titles join the Extra catalog each month, the Premium classic library keeps quietly shrinking, and every subscriber receives at least three PS Plus free games at the start of the month. April 2026 will be a slight exception to that last point, with the free games arriving a touch later than subscribers might expect. The reason is mundane, but worth knowing.
The April 2026 PS Plus free games will be announced later than usual
Veteran PS Plus subscribers will recognize the pattern immediately, but for everyone else, it’s easy to be caught off guard. Sony follows a fixed communication formula, State of Play aside: the monthly PS Plus free games are announced on the Wednesday before the first Tuesday of the following month, and go live that Tuesday. Most of the time, this conveniently falls toward the end of the current month. Occasionally, though, the calendar doesn’t cooperate, and April 2026 is one of those months.
The April 2026 free PS Plus games will be revealed on April 1st (and no, that’s not an April Fools’ joke) with the titles going live on Tuesday, April 7th. So if nothing appears this week, there’s no cause for alarm. There is, of course, every chance that dataminer BillBil-Kun will beat Sony to the punch and leak the headline of the PS Plus lineup ahead of time, as has become something of a reliable tradition lately. In the meantime, anyone yet to claim the March 2026 free games, that are PGA Tour 2K25, Monster Hunter Rise, Slime Rancher 2, and The Elder Scrolls Online, still has a little time left to do so.
