When a Troll Tried to Mock Nintendo and Handed PlayStation a Million-Dollar Idea

In the console wars, a brilliant idea can sometimes emerge from a well-aimed joke by a hater. That is at least what happened with one PlayStation fan who clearly dislikes Nintendo. In a post on X.com, he compared Nintendo’s exploitation of licences such as Mario with Sony’s, using an AI-generated image of Astro Bot in Mario-style spin-offs as an example. However, he was surprised to find that his criticism of Nintendo was met with enthusiasm by most gamers who reacted to his post.

What if PlayStation followed Nintendo’s lead? A brilliant idea could potentially come from a troll post

While PlayStation is renowned for its strong IPs and critically acclaimed solo games, recent years have shown another side to the famous publisher. On the one hand, there have been many remakes and remasters, and on the other, there have been numerous attempts (not always successful) in the GaaS (games as a service) market. Meanwhile, one of its biggest competitors, Nintendo, is better known for using its most iconic IPs, such as Mario and Zelda, to create games in a variety of genres.

A PlayStation fan posted an AI-generated image on X.com showing Astro Bot, the brand’s latest mascot, in various spin-offs such as Astro Bot RPG, Astro Kart and Paper Astro Bot. This clearly references Nintendo’s strategy around Mario and similar titles. Much to the troll’s surprise, many people who reacted to the post actually loved the idea and thought that PlayStation should mimic Nintendo more.

“Concept is so good that I almost liked a hate tweet” said one X.com user, reposting the AI-generated image showing Astro Bot as the PlayStation equivalent of Nintendo’s famous Italian plumber. Will the brand follow its fan’s idea? That remains to be seen.
