It was the big surprise of February 2026’s State of Play. In an era where rumors and leaks often diminish the surprise factor of major announcements, Santa Monica Studio and PlayStation managed to keep their secret until the very last moment. This is quite an achievement in an industry where nearly everything gets leaked. Before taking the God of War series to new horizons, the original Greek trilogy will be remade in the coming years.
This is a major announcement for long-time fans of the franchise, many of whom remember Kratos as a god still consumed by rage. The studio seems eager to return to Kratos’ origins and center the narrative around his early days in the pantheon. To add to the excitement, the revelation was accompanied by the surprise release of a more modest Metroidvania-style prequel: God of War Sons of Sparta. And if you thought the studio had shown all its cards, think again, more surprises are on the way.
Will the Next Game from the God of War Studio Be Revealed This Year?
According to well-informed sources like shinobi602 and NateTheHate, the answer is yes. The two insiders, known for their reliable track record with PlayStation news, shared on the ResetEra forums after State of Play that Santa Monica Studio still has a major announcement to make before the end of the year. For those closely following the studio’s updates, and PlayStation’s overall news, it’s clear that Cory Barlog’s (God of War 2018) new project, which is rumored to be an entirely new IP, has yet to be revealed. According to shinobi602, however, the announcement is not too far away.
When asked if this new game, coming from one of God of War’s key creators, would be released in 2028, shinobi602 responded, “Not that far (barring any delays of course). Like I said, given the quarter they’re targeting, I do expect that.” He speculated that a reveal could happen at either the traditional State of Play in May or at Summer Game Fest 2026, though he couldn’t confirm this with certainty. “If not by then, then they’ve either pushed the release out further or doing a shorter reveal to release,” he added. “Unless a major delay happens, the game will be out in 2027”, NateTheHate also shared on social media.

What Do We Know About the Game?
At this point, the details of this new project remain particularly scarce. One thing is certain: Cory Barlog took the lead after God of War’s release in 2018, stepping down as director for Ragnarok but remaining as its creative director. This new game has reportedly been in development for several years, and rumors persist that the studio is exploring a science fiction universe, like Naughty Dog did with Intergalactic The Heretic Prophet. We may learn more by summer 2026, but until then, caution is advised. As with any rumor, no matter how credible the source is, caution remains the standard until an official announcement is made.
