If You Love Chrono Trigger, This New Game Is Made for You

If you’ve been longing for a return to one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, you’re far from alone. Chrono Trigger, an iconic turn-based Japanese RPG, has left a lasting mark on the genre, and its influence remains strong decades later. A newly announced project could finally fill that void, and it may arrive sooner than expected. On Thursday, February 5, fans of Chrono Trigger were pleasantly surprised by the reveal of a new game that looks instantly familiar.

Time travel, a strong tactical focus, striking character designs, and even a sword-wielding frog all point in the same direction: te is shaping up to be a true spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger. The reason is no mystery, as the project is led by none other than Masato Kato.

A new tactical J-RPG from a Chrono Trigger creator

Another Eden Begins has immediately caught the attention of Chrono Trigger fans thanks to Masato Kato’s involvement. A key figure in the history of Japanese role-playing games, Kato was the scenario writer for Square’s cult classic and has also contributed to titles such as Xenogears, FF11, Chrono Cross, Heroes of Mana, and even FF7. He is joined on this new project by Yasunori Mitsuda, who returns to compose the soundtrack after working on Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears.

Published under the WRIGHT FLYER STUDIOS banner, Another Eden Begins takes players to the peaceful village of Baruoki, home to Aldo and his younger sister, Feinne. That calm is shattered when Feinne is kidnapped, and Aldo’s search for her sends him hurtling 800 years into the future. As expected, like in Chrono Trigger, time travel will play a central role throughout the adventure.

Over the course of the game, Aldo can recruit up to 18 companions, each with their own backstory and unique abilities. Combat is turn-based and appears to emphasize strategic party composition, with a wide range of character archetypes available. According to the game’s Steam page, Another Eden Begins will feature more than ten different endings, as well as a New Game+ mode. The game is currently scheduled for release in 2026 on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
