Recent weeks have been turbulent for The Sims community. Following the $55 billion acquisition of EA by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners – the latter led by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law – concerns have been mounting. The involvement of this consortium has raised significant alarms, particularly given The Sims’ reputation for inclusivity and the values upheld by its community. The stark disconnect between these values and the new ownership structure has led many long-time partners, including some of the largest content creators in the Sims 4 ecosystem, to announce boycotts and part ways with the Partners program.
Then, there’s the uncertain future of the franchise, now being shaped by Project Rene, a new standalone experience that, in many ways, will define the series’ future direction. However, recent leaks have further dampened the community’s enthusiasm. Concerns are growing over the art direction, a mini-game that bears a striking resemblance to Roblox’s Dress to Impress, and the inclusion of microtransactions. While some fans have shrugged it off, saying, « No big deal, I’ll stick with The Sims 4, » it’s seems that not everyone will have that option.
Is This the End of Pirated Versions of The Sims 4?
« It’s like 9/11 for Sims fans, » tweeted a well-known figure within the community. Many players, frustrated by the high cost of accessing the full Sims 4 experience, turned to illegal versions of the game. While this is obviously not something to condone, pirated content from groups or individuals like Anadius became a popular workaround, offering everything from kits to full expansions for free. Some players used these versions to test DLCs before committing to a purchase, but now they will be forced to pay. Disillusioned by how the Sims 4 community had treated him, Anadius recently announced he was stepping away. « All done! Have fun playing the game, » he tweeted before deleting his Discord server, past messages, and links to his infamous Uploader.
This decision shocked the Sims 4 community, sparking a range of reactions, from surprise to understanding. Many users who had relied on his work expressed gratitude, while the more “law-abiding” players seemed relieved. However, a significant portion of the community, often unable to afford all the content, is now left without access to key features. « Anadius’ unlocker was the only thing keeping many players engaged, as at least the broken packs were available for free. Honestly, I might just give up on The Sims 4 now. It hasn’t been fun for a while, and this feels like the final nail in the coffin,» one player shared.
Bugs and Broken Expansions
It’s not just the pricing issues pushing players toward illegal solutions: The Sims 4’s problematic DLCs have also left many frustrated. The most notable example is the For Rent expansion, which continues to suffer from a persistent bug that corrupts save files, erasing years of players’ progress. This issue has remained unresolved for nearly two years, with Maxis failing to fix it. While EA may be content with the departure of the most well-known hacker from its community, it’s clear that they can no longer afford to make similar mistakes with future expansions. Rumors have emerged suggesting that the publisher is working on a remastered version of The Sims 4, but this has been met with a lukewarm reception from the community, many of whom are losing faith in the game’s future.
