It has been compared to the UFC, but with machines rather than humans. The event has drawn interest from fans and engineers.

First Fight: Robotic Showdown in Shenzhen

On July 16, the city of Shenzhen, in southern China, hosted a headline match that attracted attention. Two advanced humanoid robots entered the ring representing team White Eagle and team Bullfighter. These T800 models exchanged tactical strikes and defensive moves resembling mixed martial arts.

The robots are 1.73 meters tall and 75 kilograms in weight, showing notable agility and precision (1.73 m ≈ 5 ft 8 in; 75 kg ≈ 165 lb). A dramatic moment occurred when the White Eagle robot landed a kick that dislodged the Bullfighter’s head sensor module, effectively decapitating it. Still, according to the South China Morning Post, the damaged Bullfighter robot went on to win, a result that highlighted the unpredictability of these matches.

Who Took Part and How the Robots Work

URKL’s debut included competitors from 32 major universities and research institutes, representing more than 10 countries and cities. The event is run by Engine AI, led by founder Zhao Tongyang, who is positioning the platform as both a competition and a site for technical development.

The bouts test more than hardware; they also evaluate the “brain algorithms” (the software and control strategies) teams build. As the South China Morning Post described it, the event challenges a robot’s dynamic balance, visual perception, and real-time decision-making in chaotic situations.

How the Robots Were Judged

The Global Times says judges scored robots on four main points: effectiveness of strikes, body stability, defensive and evasion capabilities, and overall resilience. That scoring system makes teams focus on strategy, defense, and durability, not just raw power.

The tournament champion will receive a 10 kg pure gold championship belt, worth nearly $1.4 million USD. The final showdown is scheduled for Dubai, either at the end of next December or the start of 2027.

According to the Global Times, Zhao Tongyang hopes URKL will accelerate research and industrialization in robotics and grow into a commercial event with global reach, combining competitive sport and technical development.

As humanoid robots compete in the arena, their performances attract interest from their creators and from a wider audience curious about what these machines can do.

[116

post-73115","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trends","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33
["GET
