This year also marks the Estonian Air Force’s return to taking conscripts after more than 22 years. The change relates to Estonia’s military planning and public involvement in national defense.

A New Chapter for Conscription

This intake of over 700 conscripts is notable for its size and composition. Among the recruits are 32 women, reflecting growing gender inclusion in Estonia’s defense forces. These new arrivals are part of a wider conscription cycle totaling 1,200 individuals, selected from a potential pool of 4,000 eligible recruits. The selection was competitive; about 1,500 applicants were turned away.

Officials introduced a one-year “gap year” in the conscription schedule to modernize and streamline training. The pause gives the Defense Forces of Estonia time to upgrade training methods and update equipment handling and tactical procedures.

Training Options Are Wide-Ranging

Conscripts have a range of training and assignment options. Units include Cyber Command, the Special Operations Command, the Artillery Regiment, and the Reconnaissance Battalions. Each recruit receives training matched to their assigned unit so they can step into roles within the Estonian Defense Forces.

Other placements include the Logistics Battalions, the Military Police, and the 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigades. The Estonian Air Force welcomed more than 60 new conscripts. They will train at the modern Ämari air base, learning to operate systems such as the IRIS-T air defense missile systems.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

This intake is notable because the Air Force reopened conscription and because of changes in how conscription is managed. Anu Rannaveski, head of the Defense Resources Agency, says this conscription cycle sets a precedent for future calls and indicates a move toward restoring a regular annual intake of 4,000 conscripts starting in 2027.

Conscription in Estonia typically lasts between 8 to 11 months, depending on the specialty a recruit trains in. For men, service is mandatory after they finish school. Former conscripts stay on the reserve list and can be called up for exercises such as Okas to maintain skills.

Conscription includes volunteers with varied motivations. For example, Sirli chose air defense, while Indrek and Rasmus represent a range of personal reasons for signing up. The connection between individual goals and national service contributes to the composition of Estonia’s defense forces.

Bringing personnel into varied roles helps maintain operational flexibility. As the country adjusts its conscription approach, involving a diverse and committed group becomes more important. This latest intake increases Estonia’s defense capacity and supports ongoing modernization efforts.

[116

post-73112","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trends","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33
["GET
