From Stellar Blade to Metaphor: ReFantazio, Dragon’s Dogma 2 to Lies of P, the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to build an impressive library of standout titles from recent years. And as debates around the console’s technical capabilities and its ability to handle demanding open worlds rumble on across various forums, one gargantuan MMORPG from one of Japan’s most beloved franchises made its appearance at the showcase.

FF14 shows up on Nintendo Switch 2

Back on April 24th, Square Enix made it official, an announcement long expected but that surprised nobody: Final Fantasy 14 is heading to Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in August. A major undertaking that Naoki Yoshida, the legendary savior of the MMORPG, had been openly discussing for some time, in keeping with his long-standing ambition to bring the game to as many platforms as possible. At the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, Square Enix offered the most concrete look at the Nintendo Switch 2 version to date. Barely 30 seconds of footage blending gameplay and cutscenes, but enough to give a meaningful sense of the port’s quality. No firm launch date has been confirmed yet, with Square Enix continuing to point to an “early access” window on the hybrid console for August.

An unwelcome reminder for veteran players

The new showcase also came with a sting in the tail that proved rather less exciting. As on every other platform, Final Fantasy 14 on Nintendo Switch 2 will require a subscription. Nothing new for seasoned Eorzea veterans, but a reminder that players already subscribed on PS5, Xbox Series, or PC will need to take out an additional separate subscription on Nintendo Switch 2 if they want to take the MMORPG on the go. Factor in the cost of the game itself and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and the bill starts to look decidedly steep for existing players.

Square Enix is softening the blow somewhat, promising a half-price subscription for affected veterans. It’s also worth noting that during the early access period, expected to last one month, Nintendo Switch Online will not be required. And on a more positive note, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of FF14 will support cross-progression, meaning saves and characters will carry across all platforms seamlessly.

Source: Square Enix

[1
152,44,143
post-73081","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-ff14","tag-nintendo-switch-2","tag-square-enix","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33
["GET
