Surprisingly, this trend can even apply to games you wouldn’t expect. Take Grand Theft Auto 5, for example, thanks to the massive success of GTA Online, the game has managed to span three console generations without losing momentum. This is a remarkable feat, and Rockstar Games seems determined to do the same with GTA 6, if the latest rumors are true

Could GTA 6 Become the Next Big MMORPG?

Although Rockstar’s current focus is on the single-player campaign, it’s safe to assume that they won’t abandon the feature that has helped Grand Theft Auto 5 thrive for over a decade. So, the question isn’t whether Grand Theft Auto Online will return with GTA 6, but when and how it will return. Thanks to WccfTech, we may now have our first clues to answer that question.

This speculation comes from an interview about the future of MMORPGs in Western development, where the media spoke to industry veterans, including Rich Vogel, who has worked on titles like Star Wars The Old Republic, DOOM (2016), Halo Infinite, and Gotham Knights. During the interview, Vogel mentioned GTA 6 and hinted that the game could evolve into an MMORPG over time.

“I believe a large audience is waiting for the right MMORPG to emerge,” Vogel told Wccf Tech when asked about the genre’s future in the West. “The problem is that no publisher is willing to invest the money and take the risk at this time. My instinct tells me that the next major MMORPG will likely come from Asia and/or Europe. If what I have been hearing about GTA 6’s features and gameplay is true, it could evolve into an MMORPG, as many of its planned features are typically found in MMORPGs.”

Let’s Be Cautious

Vogel is careful not to give too much away, and it’s important to remember that he isn’t involved in GTA 6’s development. Rockstar has also yet to reveal its plans for GTA Online. However, Wccf Tech points out that Rockstar’s acquisition of Cfx.re, the team behind popular GTA 5 MMORPG mods, in 2023 could be a significant clue that points in this direction.

That said, it’s still important to take all of this with a grain of salt until Rockstar provides official details. One thing is certain, though: given the time and resources devoted to GTA 6, the game will likely be supported for many years. As for how that support will look, we’ll have to wait for the game’s release, set for November 19, 2026.

Source: WccfTech

[1
45,46
post-72016","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-gta","tag-gta-6","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33
["GET
