Think no one could out-hype Rockstar Games? Think again. GTA 6 remains the most anticipated video game of the decade, arguably of all time, but it may no longer be the single most attention-commanding cultural event on the planet. The proof arrived this week: months before launch, Rockstar’s record-breaking second trailer from May 2025 has been officially dethroned. And the record-breaker is none other than Spider-Man 4.
GTA 6 loses one of its records to Spider-Man 4
If you’ve had one eye on film news lately, you’ll know that Marvel has finally dropped the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the MCU’s next installment centered on everyone’s favorite neighbourhood. The reaction was immediate and overwhelming. Millions of fans piled on within hours, and the view count kept climbing at a staggering pace. According to figures shared by Global Box Office, the trailer surpassed 500 million views, and it got there in just twelve hours.
That last detail is what makes the achievement truly extraordinary. Rockstar’s GTA 6 second trailer had set the previous benchmark with over 475 million views in a full 24-hour window. Spider-Man: Brand New Day did it in half the time. Given the sheer cultural weight Spider-Man carries as one of the most universally beloved figures in modern pop culture, the enthusiasm was never going to be in short supply, but a result of this magnitude still raises eyebrows.
Especially given the context. Marvel’s cultural influence has undeniably taken a knock in recent years, which makes this kind of seismic response all the more telling. Brand New Day may well be the shot in the arm the MCU has been desperately waiting for. And Marvel is clearly not leaving anything to chance, a relentless social media campaign, a high-profile event with Tom Holland at its center staged right in the heart of New York City, the studio is firing on all cylinders.
Could Rockstar hit back?
There’s an emotional dimension to this too. Brand New Day marks a genuine new chapter for Peter Parker, picking up after the gut-punch ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. The hunger for this story was real and deep-seated, and the trailer response reflects exactly that. Now the question becomes whether Spider-Man 4 can hold onto its record, through this trailer or the ones still to come before its July 29, 2026 release, or whether GTA 6 will reclaim the crown when its inevitable third trailer lands. Either way, the next few months are going to be very interesting.
