Crimson Desert on Base PS5, a Disaster or a Surprise? The First Video Just Dropped

Despite repeated reassurances from Pearl Abyss, a lingering anxiety had taken hold in the community: could a game this visually staggering actually hold its own on standard PS5 hardware, let alone Xbox Series X|S? With the March 19, 2026 release now almost here, PlayStation Japan’s official YouTube channel has stepped in to address those concerns head-on, dropping a 20-minute gameplay sequence of Crimson Desert captured entirely on a base PS5. What it shows is hard to argue with.

Crimson Desert on base PS5 is better than feared

Until now, virtually every public showing of Crimson Desert had been running on either a high-end gaming PC or a PS5 Pro, two configurations that naturally present the game in its most flattering light. On PC, the title benefits from the full suite of modern rendering tools: DLSS, FSR, and ray tracing. On PS5 Pro, it draws on the recently rolled-out PSSR 2.0, which will eventually be fully supported by Pearl Abyss’s game. In both cases, the results have been nothing short of spectacular.

The base PS5, however, is a different conversation entirely. Pearl Abyss had been firm in its insistence that players shouldn’t fear a Cyberpunk 2077-on-PS4 style catastrophe, but words only go so far, and skepticism remained widespread until footage could speak for itself. PlayStation Japan clearly understood that, and delivered exactly what the community needed to see.

YouTube’s compression doesn’t do the game any favors, and it’s genuinely difficult to assess true visual fidelity through its inconsistent bitrate. Even so, what comes through is largely positive: resolution appears solid throughout, and performance holds up impressively well, even during the most demanding sequences, with multiple enemies, particle effects, and visual chaos filling the screen simultaneously. Whether that consistency carries over across an entire playthrough is a question only the full release can answer. For that, all eyes turn to March 19, and the arrival of one of this year’s most anticipated games.
