Given the tremendous success that was the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023, many players may not know that it was in early access for nearly three years. During this time, only Act 1 was available, and it underwent significant changes in the final version we know today. Video game enthusiasts can now take advantage of a recently released mod to (re)discover the content cut from the game between its early access version and the current release.
Extensive access to an early restoration of Baldur’s Gate 3
A new mod for Baldur’s Gate 3, aptly named “Early Access Scenes Restored”, is now available for download on Nexus Mods, and therefore currently only for PC. This archaeological endeavor comes from HyperspaceTowel. As the name suggests, it restores dialogues, and even NPCs and conversations from the game’s early access version. More than 100 conversations and over 1,000 lines of dialogue are now available in the final version of Larian Studios’ masterpiece.
According to the mod’s creator, while some deletions were understandable, “a surprising amount still works very well in the final version of Baldur’s Gate 3“. Players can therefore expect more encounters, camp events, interactions with their companions, and, in general, improved responsiveness from them throughout Act 1. Among the restored content are Gale’s deer stew, the fishermen under the Mind Flayer’s spell, and Shadowheart’s ultimatum.
Note that the Early Access Scenes Restored mod is still in development. The modder indeed continues to update it regularly as they discover cut content from Baldur’s Gate 3 that is still relevant in the final version. You then may have to wait a while for more exciting discoveries in the game’s early access archives. It’s nevertheless a good way to pass the time until Divinity’s early access release, and then its final version, which will also very likely undergo significant changes.
