In a recent interview with Variety, JB Perette, president and general manager of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Global Streaming and Games division, outlined the company’s new strategic direction for its video game division. According to him, the group’s future should brighten after a particularly bleak period with the upcoming return of “flagship franchises”, including Hogwarts Legacy 2, whose release window is now becoming clearer.
Is Warner Bros making a strong comeback soon, especially thanks to Hogwarts Legacy 2 ?
Warner Bros.’ gaming division, among others, has definitely had a rough few recent years. With the exception of the original Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, the group has since suffered several major failures (including the infamous Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League), significant financial difficulties, and several waves of layoffs. After substantial internal restructuring, JB Perette believes the worst is over and that the group should get back on its feet in the future. This could even begin this year with LEGO Batman: The Dark Knight Legacy.
But JB Perette told Variety that things will get even more exciting in the coming years. “The real fruits will start coming in 2027-2028, when we return to some of our biggest franchises”. It’s quite easy to understand that he’s referring, among other things, to Hogwarts Legacy 2, on which Warner Bros. has high hopes for getting back on track. Even so, many questions remain as to whether it will still be a single-player game, or rather a cooperative/multiplayer game, or even (what worries the community the most) a GaaS (Game as a Service).
While awaiting for more official information regarding Hogwarts Legacy 2, it remains to be seen whether JB Perette’s predictions to Variety come true and whether Warner Bros. Discovery will indeed recover, whether its gaming division or as a whole. It’s also worth noting that the group is still in negociation for a takeover, according to the latest news, by Paramount, instead of Netflix, which reportedly withdrew in the face of a more attractive offer from its competitor. For better or for worse, only time will tell.
