The Last of Us 3 Multiplayer? Naughty Dog Might Have a Surprise in Store

So when will we finally get to play the studio’s next game? That’s the question on every fan’s mind. Nearly six years after The Last of Us 2, fans are eagerly awaiting Naughty Dog’s return to the spotlight with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, announced for late 2024. However, as Neil Druckmann has confirmed, this isn’t the only project in development, and we might already have a hint about Naughty Dog’s second mystery game.

The Last of Us 3 or Intergalactic multiplayer? An Intriguing Job Posting

According to Tech4Gamers, a new job listing by Naughty Dog reveals the studio is looking for a Senior Sound Designer. While the posting references Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the position itself doesn’t appear to be directly tied to that project. Instead, several details suggest it could be for an entirely different game, potentially one with a strong multiplayer focus. The required skills mention “experience with multiplayer games” and “implementing sounds on multiple platforms,” hinting that this mystery title could be a multiplayer project designed for a multiplatform release, or at least a simultaneous PS5 and PC launch, similar to Helldivers 2.

Could this mysterious project be Naughty Dog giving multiplayer another shot after the failed attempt in The Last of Us universe? Or is it simply a PlayStation-driven initiative, nudging one of its biggest studios toward multiplayer, similar to what Guerrilla Games did with Horizon Hunters Gathering? Another possibility is that the job posting actually relates directly to Intergalactic The Heretic Prophet itself. Either way, the studio clearly has surprises in store.

A multiplayer experience or a full game?

Though Naughty Dog is best known for narrative-driven single-player experiences, the studio is no stranger to multiplayer. Titles like The Last of Us, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End all included multiplayer modes that were extremely popular. It’s possible the studio is aiming to replicate that success with its upcoming projects, or perhaps even something in the vein of The Last of Us 3 that builds on its work in The Last of Us Factions.

For now, details remain scarce. What is certain is that Naughty Dog is keeping its cards close to the chest, and fans are left to speculate about what’s brewing behind the scenes. This includes everything related to Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which has received little attention since its announcement at the Game Awards. Hopefully, more information will surface soon, though a release likely isn’t expected before 2027.
