FF7 Rebirth will receive a new free update, featuring highly anticipated new content

The FF7 Remake trilogy is set to get a second wind in the coming months. PlayStation exclusivity reportedly limited Square Enix’s reach, prompting the Japanese publisher to shift toward a fully multiplatform strategy. The franchise had already started exploring the Xbox ecosystem with FF14 and FF16, before finally branching out to two previously neglected platforms: the Xbox Series and the Nintendo Switch 2. Both consoles received their own versions of FF7 Remake at the end of January 2026, a particularly notable release on Nintendo’s hybrid console, which Square Enix seems to have handled expertly.

The strategy appears to be paying off, especially on Nintendo, where the game topped the digital sales charts both before and after launch. Naturally, Square Enix quickly accelerated its plans. The publisher has now confirmed that FF7 Rebirth will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series this summer. As with the first installment, these new versions will come with a free update for all players.

FF7 Rebirth’s Free Update Scheduled

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will make its second appearance on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series starting June 3, 2026. On that same date, Square Enix will also release a free update for all players across every platform. This move follows the approach used for the ports released earlier this year. As a reminder, the Switch 2 and Xbox Series versions of FF7 Remake introduced new features that could significantly alter the gameplay experience, including settings inspired by classic “god modes.”

With health points permanently maxed, materia instantly upgraded to the highest level, and accelerated experience gains, Square Enix appears determined to ensure that all players, regardless of skill level or experience, can enjoy the game in the way that suits them best. FF7 Rebirth will follow the same approach, with a free update that will include the following settings:

  • Constant Max HP
  • Constant Max MP
  • Limit Gauge Always Full
  • Constant Max Synergy
  • ATB Gauge Always Full
  • Constant Max Damage
  • Max Damage: Minigames
  • 2x EXP & 3x AP Gain
  • Easy Weapon Ability Acquisition
  • More Materials Collected
  • Constant Max Gil
  • Constant Max Recovery Items
  • Max Materia Levels

The Platinum Trophy Debate

We hope these features help everyone enjoy the adventure in a way that best fits their playstyle”, commented Naoki Hamaguchi on social media following the announcement. While players can now tailor their experience to their liking, the community is already divided over a familiar question: should trophies be restricted for players using these options?

Many trophy hunters, and their counterparts on other platforms, argue that such options devalue a Platinum trophy earned the traditional way, while others see no problem. The debate is far from new, but it underscores how Square Enix is catering to a wide audience. After all, some trophy hunters are already willing to download free, content-light games with AI-generated challenges just to unlock a Platinum quickly. In that sense, FF7 Rebirth’s flexible gameplay options could appeal to both hardcore and casual players, without diminishing the game’s enormous content.
