2025 may now be behind us, but the games that made it memorable are far from finished telling their stories. Clair Obscur Expedition 33 proves this in the early days of 2026, thanks to some intriguing new discoveries. Although Sandfall Interactive’s title is steadily approaching its first anniversary, players continue to explore its universe, sometimes uncovering details that were deliberately hidden by the developers during production.
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 reveals new secrets
This time, the discovery isn’t found within the adventure itself, but rather in the game’s files. An internet user noticed a large amount of information related to the names of bosses and other enemies encountered throughout Clair Obscur Expedition 33. More specifically, Sandfall appears to have carefully documented the reasoning behind each name, likely to help translators by providing additional context.
For example, regarding Chevalière, the team explains that it is a word “that doesn’t really exist in this context, but is used as the feminine form of Chevalier, which means ‘Knight.’” As for Potier, Sandfall notes that it is simply a play on the word “Potter,” referring to an enemy “who uses pots.” The same logic applies to Lancelier, a term with “no specific meaning in French,” chosen because it represents an “enemy wielding a lance.”

The French-Touch
The list goes on, as the game’s code is filled with similar explanations, some more inventive than others. Staying true to their French roots, the Sandfall team even included a link to the Wikipedia page for Pétanque to explain the name Petank, and another to One-Punch Man to clarify that Gestral no Puncho is a direct reference. Then there’s Gestral Limonsol, whose name clearly stems from an inside joke.
In short, as highlighted by the Reddit post from user Responsible-Race-575, this discovery is yet another reminder that game development often hides far more depth than players initially realize. At Sandfall, inspiration seems to come from everywhere. This only heightens anticipation for the studio’s future projects, especially since it recently confirmed that work has begun on a follow-up to Clair Obscur Expedition 33. Unfortunately, it may be quite some time before we get to see the results.
