This French-made role-playing game has shattered records this year, capping it off with a spectacular finish at the 2025 Game Awards, where it took home almost every major honor, including the prestigious Game of the Year title. During his acceptance speech, Guillaume Broche made sure to pay tribute to Hironobu Sakaguchi, the father of Final Fantasy, one of the most influential franchises for Sandfall Interactive. It was a heartfelt nod to the games that shaped our childhoods and a reminder that the history of RPGs will always be inextricably tied to this legendary figure.
Yet, Clair Obscur and FF7 Remake, one of the latest major titles in the series, share another notable connection: neither is available on the Nintendo Switch 2… but that’s about to change for one of them. And there’s even a special surprise in store for players of the hybrid console just before the holidays.
Try FF7 Remake for Free on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series
It’s no longer a secret: the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, starting with the episode that reimagined this classic saga. On January 22, 2026, Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and the rest of AVALANCHE will finally land on the hybrid console. This port, which made a strong impression when we tested it at Gamescom and Paris Games Week, will not compromise on quality.
The game will take up a hefty 100 GB of space on your Nintendo Switch 2, as director Naoki Hamaguchi refused to cut corners in order to preserve the game’s visual integrity, despite the challenge of adjusting lighting to avoid any “cheap” effects. And if you don’t just want to take our word for it, you can experience it for yourself: a free demo of FF7 Remake is now available on Nintendo Switch 2.
No need to worry about exhausting your console’s storage, though. The demo is a manageable 7.9 GB. But there’s even more good news: the Xbox Series version of the port is also available for free right now, although it will require 20 GB of space on your hard drive. The demo lets you dive back into the game’s iconic opening sequence, where Cloud and AVALANCHE launch an attack on a Mako reactor in the dystopian city of Midgar.
And here’s the best part: if you choose to upgrade to the full version later, your save data will carry over, and you’ll unlock bonus items like the Revival Earrings” and the “Survival Set”. As a reminder, FF7 Remake will officially be available on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series on January 22, 2026.
