It’s a tough time for Tomb Raider fans. While anticipation for the sequel to Shadow of the Tomb Raider has dragged on for years, Aspyr and Saber Interactive provided a way to pass the time with the release of Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered and Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered. What was initially promised as a sweet moment of nostalgia for fans has turned into a nightmare, as disappointment after disappointment has piled up over the past several months.
The New Tomb Raider Collector’s Edition Sparks Outrage
Since the release of Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered last February, the controversies surrounding these projects have been hard to ignore. Issues such as incomplete remastering for The Angel of Darkness, a patch bloated with generative AI, and the imprisonment of one of the game’s composers have all contributed to the growing list of problems. Now, a new controversy has emerged regarding the Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered collector’s edition, which has sparked intense backlash within the community.
Fans had every right to expect a high-quality product from this special edition, which was priced at around $200, including shipping. On top of that, Limited Run Games delayed the release by almost eight months, pushing the collector’s edition back twice. Yet even with all this extra time, the final result has been a massive letdown for Tomb Raider fans. As the first shipments begin to arrive, it’s become painfully clear that the quality of the figurines included in the edition is far from “collector-worthy.”
The figurines are of questionable quality :badly painted, with terrible finishing and even squint features. Lara Croft, once a symbol of strength and sex appeal in the games, something Limited Run Games had promised would be part of the appeal, now looks nothing like her former self. Naturally, Tomb Raider fans have taken to social media to vent their anger and frustration, even comparing the final product to one of the retro skins included in Tomb Raider Anniversary (2007), which had been widely mocked by the community.
Fans Claim They Were Deceived
To make matters worse, just as shipments are being sent out, it appears that this same collector’s edition is now being sold at a steep discount of €70.95 (approximately $81,5) on the official Tomb Raider Gear Store. While the product is sold out, making the promotion somewhat irrelevant, the fact that such a price is being displayed has led some fans to believe that Limited Run Games intentionally inflated the original price of the collector’s edition.
This revelation has only added more fuel to the fire. As of now, Limited Run Games has yet to respond to the growing controversy, which accuses them of deceiving fans with cheap, 3D-printed figurines that fall far short of the quality that was initially promised. Thankfully, the rest of the collector’s content seems to meet expectations, which softens the blow somewhat. But this does little to ease the anger of Tomb Raider fans, who have been facing disappointment for years now.
