For Kingdom Hearts fans, the wait is starting to feel endless. Although Square Enix released a few new images shortly before the summer, there’s still no concrete news about Kingdom Hearts 4, which continues to be developed quietly behind the scenes. With hopes now resting on a possible appearance at next month’s Game Awards, fans believe they may have uncovered a clue about one of the new worlds that could appear in the upcoming installment.
A Hidden Hint from Tetsuya Nomura for Kingdom Hearts 4?
To celebrate Halloween, series director Tetsuya Nomura shared a new illustration on social media featuring Sora, Donald, and Goofy dressed in festive, Halloween-inspired outfits. Clearly influenced by The Nightmare Before Christmas, a world long familiar to Kingdom Hearts fans, the artwork may also contain a subtle but intriguing clue. To find it, you have to look closely at Sora’s Keyblade.
Some sharp-eyed fans have noticed that Sora’s weapon appears to have taken on a new design never before seen in the series. On closer inspection, its shape closely resembles Sparky, the dog from Tim Burton’s 2012 animated film Frankenweenie. Could this be Nomura’s way of teasing the inclusion of Frankenweenie as one of the new worlds in Kingdom Hearts 4? It’s certainly possible.
A Beloved World from the Franchise Fans Might Be Making a Return
This theory isn’t far-fetched, considering Nomura’s well-known appreciation for Tim Burton’s aesthetic. The director’s fondness for darkly whimsical worlds has already been showcased in The Nightmare Before Christmas sections of earlier Kingdom Hearts games, so Frankenweenie would fit perfectly within that creative lineage.
Of course, it’s important to remember that this is purely speculation for now. Square Enix has yet to reveal any official details about Kingdom Hearts 4, and while a few leaks have surfaced in recent months, nothing has been confirmed. Still, fans can’t help but hold on to every possible hint as they wait for the next chapter in Sora’s adventure.
